⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Kakashi Hatake
Age: 50
Canon: Naruto
Canon Point: beginning of Naruto Gaiden

Background:

Naruto (the series) is set in a fantasy world where some people are born with the ability to manipulate an inner force called chakra, resulting in feats of what you could tentatively call elemental magic. Also, those people usually become ninja.

With that out of the way, I'm going to do my best to run through Naruto's timeline as succinctly as possible. The important stuff starts when Kakashi was ten years old, and fighting in the Third Shinobi War as a jonin (elite ninja) of his ninja village, Konoha. During a mission he led, his teammate Obito seemingly died, leaving Kakashi his Sharingan (magic eye that has a bunch of bullshit powers). Four years after that, Konoha was infiltrated by a mysterious masked man who unleashed a giant monster made of chakra on the village. Kakashi's teacher (who was also the leader of the village at the time) died in the attack, leaving his infant son as an orphan and also sealing the chakra beast into him to save the village. Said infant son was named Naruto, and as you may have wildly guessed just now he is the main character of the series.

Twelve years passed and Naruto, along with his classmates Sasuke and Sakura, graduated from the ninja academy and were placed in a ninja team (henceforth referred to as Team 7) under the leadership of Kakashi. The four of them completed various ninja missions and lived their ninja lives for several months. Konoha is essentially a military city, and one of the ways that ninja can move up in rank is to participate in an international exam. A few months after Team 7 was created, the creatively named Chunin Exams were announced and Kakashi nominated his students to participate. During the exams, a bunch of crap happened but most importantly a powerful ninja named Orochimaru crashed the exams, first by poisoning Sasuke so he could try to steal his body and later by teaming up with another ninja village to invade and hopefully destroy Konoha.

Orochimaru succeeded in invading Konoha and killing its leader, but the invading forces were driven back and the village survived. Soon afterward Sasuke abandoned Konoha to receive training from Orochimaru for some reason, Naruto was apprenticed to another famous ninja named Jiraiya and Sakura was apprenticed to the new leader of the village, a woman named Tsunade.

After three years of separation, Naruto and Sakura teamed back up with Kakashi to reform Team 7. Around this time an organization called Akatsuki started causing trouble around the world, attacking people like Naruto who had chakra beasts sealed inside them. Team 7, with support from various other characters, fought against members of Akatsuki several times. Eventually it was revealed that Akatsuki planned to destroy the world by capturing all nine of the chakra beasts and using their power to turn the moon into a giant Sharingan eye and hypnotizing everyone in the world, causing them to die in their sleep or something like that.

Meanwhile, Sasuke continued his train of bad decisions by joining Akatsuki and becoming an internationally wanted criminal. The other members of Team 7 split their time between fighting Akatsuki and trying to track Sasuke down and beat the stupid out of him. Around this time Akatsuki attacked Konoha directly trying to get to Naruto, and destroyed the village. However all of the main characters survived and soon the leaders of the five major ninja villages, which still included Konoha (I guess since they were rebuilding already), decided to hold a meeting to discuss the growing threat of Akatsuki.

At the meeting, the masked man who attacked Konoha fifteen years previously appeared, claimed he was Madara Uchiha (a guy who founded Konoha but later went insane and decided to destroy it, but died before he could) and declared war on all the ninja villages. This resulted in the ninja villages forming one big Shinobi Alliance for the first time in history, mostly because "Madara" actually had an army consisting of man-shaped plant creatures and famous ninja of the past revived as immortal zombies. The battle between the Shinobi Alliance and Akatsuki was known as the Fourth Shinobi War.

In the war, Kakashi served as a general and several epic battles were had. Eventually he and the other various ninja faced off against "Madara", who was revealed to be Obito. Rather than dying, he had actually been nursed back to health somehow by the real Madara and then was manipulated into believing that destroying the world was a good idea. Kakashi and Obito fought for a while, then the real Madara was revived as an immortal zombie and he and Obito used the nine chakra beasts to create one really big monster. After a really long and drawn out battle, Sasuke showed up and decided to fight on the side of the Shinobi Alliance, Team 7 got together for one last fight, and then they sort of lost and the Sharingan moon plan was enacted.

Of course, Team 7 wasn't affected, because of Sasuke working his Sharingan bullshit. They convinced Obito to be a good guy again, just in time for Madara to be destroyed and replaced by a woman named Kaguya, who was basically a goddess bent on destroying the world so she could absorb all chakra. Team 7 plus Obito then fought Kaguya and eventually won. Obito died (for real this time) and the survivors of the various battles returned home to an era of peace.

Soon after the end of the Fourth Shinobi War, Kakashi was chosen to be the leader of Konoha. He served as the leader of the village for an unspecified number of years before stepping down and passing the title to his student Naruto. About twenty years after the end of the Fourth Shinobi War, (it's unspecified in canon, but context clues suggest it's been about that long) Sasuke was attacked by a strange child while on a mission, and the child had Sharingan eyes. This was concerning because Sasuke should have been the only person still possessing a Sharingan. He reported the incident to Naruto, who passed it along to Kakashi (who seemed to be semi-retired to an information-gathering position). This is the point at which I will be pulling Kakashi into the game, since the news that an enemy is running around with a Sharingan was a bit alarming.

Personality:

Kakashi is a complex character. Due to his experiences as a ninja--and the vast majority of his experiences fall under that category, as he joined the ninja corps at age five--he has a unique outlook on life. He believes strongly that a ninja's goal should be the well-being of the village as a whole, and to that end he frequently puts his missions and comrades before his own wants and even before his own life. He isn't even that bothered by the thought of dying, as long as he can be useful to the village to the end. In the same vein, he believes that as long as his beliefs are passed to the next generation, he'll live on regardless of the state of his physical body.

Kakashi is frequently hailed as a genius. Not just because he is a powerful ninja, but because he has an intuitive mind and can analyze various situations quickly and efficiently. He uses this to great effect as a leader on the battlefield, but more frequently he uses his analytical skills to observe the people and day-to-day situations around him. He usually seems calm and collected on the outside, while on the inside he freely expresses emotion. Occasionally he lets it out, so to speak, and speaks passionately on various subjects. He is very earnest in speech; generally speaking, if he says it he means it. He is also good at noticing things about people's motivations that they may not have even realized themselves yet. Being sensitive to the emotions of others allows him to form lasting friendships.

Kakashi seems to get attached to people easily, in some cases even his enemies. He tends to show his affection by action rather than words--for example, in canon he's never really shown having a serious conversation with Gai outside of missions, but he frequently accepts Gai's absurd physical challenges during their off time. He also seems to be highly regarded among his fellow ninja, and appears to have a friendly relationship with most of them. He also has a mischievous streak; he hazes his young students by showing up egregiously late to all of their meetings, and frequently teases his friends by pretending to be unaffected by whatever they're talking about at the moment.

Having said all of those flattering things, Kakashi also has a plethora of flaws. As a child he was basically an arrogant ass, mostly because he was heads above his age peers in terms of skill as a ninja. Unfortunately that was drilled out of him during his preteen years via the traumatizing deaths of his entire ninja team, and as a result his personality almost dipped into the absolute opposite side of the spectrum. Although he is regarded as a superior ninja, Kakashi doesn't think very highly of himself. In fact, by his standards, he believes himself to be trash, although he doesn't bring it up very often. He tends to hold himself responsible for everything he's involved in. For example, although there were plenty of external factors in the way Team 7 turned out, Kakashi blamed himself for the team falling apart and Sasuke abandoning the village, even going so far as to apologize to his students for being a terrible teacher years later. He also blamed himself for the deaths of his teammates, Obito and Rin. Although his actions only played a small part in their respective deaths, he still held himself responsible decades later and even nearly let Obito kill him over it.

Kakashi is also in the unfortunate habit of over-extending himself in battle, to the point that it is rare for him not to spend a week or two in the hospital after every mission. And while his arrogant tendencies are usually suppressed, they sometimes pop back up and get him into trouble--like the time he ended up in a month-long coma because he thought he could take on another Sharingan user in an illusion battle. Also, while his calm and cool outer appearance can give him the impression of being in control, it can also lead to some awkward situations, because he tends to react internally rather than externally, except in critical situations. This can cause him to come off as uncaring or as not paying attention. Of course, sometimes he really isn't paying attention, which is arguably worse (or funnier, depending).

Kakashi's hobbies run the spectrum from weird to outright inappropriate. Having spent most of his life as a ninja, he seems to spend a lot of his down time training. This involves exercises of varying intensity, from regular push-ups to scaling a mountain with one hand tied behind his back. Kakashi also enjoys reading, with his favorite genre being romance novels. And while he does seem to be something of a romantic, it can't be denied that he chooses to read romance novels that heavily feature smut. As most powerful ninjas in Naruto, Kakashi is more than a bit perverted. He even reads his favorite smutty books in public without too much shame, much to the consternation of his students. Kakashi also loves dogs--in particular, he has a summoning contract with a pack of dogs that he seems to have spent a lot of time training in the ninja arts. Kakashi also likes to do basic fun things like eating out with friends.

Basically, despite his flaws and the struggles he's been through in life, Kakashi is a slightly eccentric man who is loyal to his friends and strives to pass on his knowledge to the younger generations. He's equally likable and annoying, passionate and demure, but at the heart of it he's just a guy trying to be the best he can be.
Abilities:

1. Ninja stuff: Kakashi can perform various ninjutsu, or ninja techniques, relating to the elements Earth, Wind, Fire, Lightning and Water. He also knows some genjutsu, or illusion techniques, although he doesn't use them too often. He is also more than proficient in hand-to-hand combat, both armed and un-armed. He is familiar with weapons such as kunai, shuriken, and at one time even wielded a short sword. Ninja techniques also allow him to do unusual things such as walking on water or up vertical surfaces (it has to do with using chakra to stick to things, basically).

2. Summoning: Kakashi has a summoning contract with a pack of ninja dogs. They each know various ninja techniques, and can talk. While they can be killed, they usually dispel the summoning to retreat back to their home world before their injuries become critical. There are eight of them, all of whom have distinct personalities, but since the summoning limit in-game is five obviously three of them will not be appearing in this game.

3. Tracking: Kakashi is, in his own words, "something of a tracker". In other words, he has a really good sense of smell and is trained to follow people both by scent and by following the signs they leave behind--tracks in the dirt, snapped twigs, etc.

4. Survival skills: Kakashi is trained in various survival skills, or in other words he knows how to camp competently with or without supplies and is used to taking long trips into the wilderness. He also knows basic first aid plus a few extra things in that area he's picked up over the years--bandaging wounds, field stitching, things like that.

Honestly I don't think Kakashi's abilities need to be nerfed, he's pretty conservative in his use of them and his truly over-powered techniques went away when he lost his Sharingan eye. Any use of ninja techniques will obviously be discussed with the other players involved, too.

Alignment:

Kakashi's alignment will be with Peromei; his entire character arc is about turning despair into hope (literally, the final page of his backstory chapter had "from despair to hope!!" plastered on it in big letters) and he even gives a monologue about how he could have easily turned towards hurting others or even suicide but he didn't because in the midst of his despair he kept desperately searching for reasons to hope.
